Course Details
This course is planned to run, we will be splitting the potential 6 candidates into two groups of three for the entire day, using separate classrooms and Powerboats for Social Distancing requirements.
Please note that this is an ASSESSMENT followed by Training. By passing the Assessment candidates can then go onto the RYA Powerboat Instructor course - the training is not there to get candidates onto the Instructor course.
(Most Centres provide an Assessment only)
We add a Training element to bring you up to speed with the current RYA Powerboat Level 2 course skills, as they may well have changed since you completed the Level 2 course.
You will also complete a Passage Plan navigating in one of our RIBs.
We want you to be fully prepared for a successful entry into the RYA Powerboat Instructors course.

Course Content
A full day of practical/theory training and assessment based around the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. (Minimum 5 hours-dependent on how many are attending)
The Powerboat Instructors course doesn't have time to brush up bad habits or to teach the practical or theoretical skills of driving/navigating a Powerboat. The Instructors course concentrates on applying the "Instructional" element to your already high standard of knowledge and driving skills.
So, to enable Instructor candidates to "hit the ground running" the Skills Assessment course is there to ensure that individual Instructor candidates driving and navigation skills are at an acceptable "Instructor" level prior to the Powerboat Instructors course.
We will run the one day course with training in the powerboat/classroom - to bring you up to speed with the current RYA Powerboat Level 2 course syllabus - and an assessment of your application of skills. Check out the content of the RYA Powerboat L2 Skills Assessment in Downloads below.
"The level of teaching and standard of equipment & facilities is better than any other centre I have been to"
Paul Bennett. RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment.

Navigation exercise afloat
The Powerboat Instructor Pre-Assessment course will include a navigation exercise from our base at Southampton Dry Stack Boatyard to Cowes (weather permitting) or Hamble and back, this enables you to practice and test your Passage Planning and Pilotage skills (as these have to be taught on the Powerboat Level 2 course) You will receive feedback and coaching to bring your skills up to the standard needed.
This is an opportunity to practice/improve those rusty skills and brush off some cobwebs whilst reviewing planing skills (high speed manoeuvres), slow speed manoeuvres and those essential navigation skills.
"Excellent equipment and facilities, and course delivered in a friendly, professional and very informative way"
Ben Waterfield. RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment.

Assessment Content
"RYA Powerboat Instructor candidates are expected to demonstrate their ability to the level of CAN in all aspects of the RYA Level 2 syllabus as described in the RYA Powerboat Logbook G20" (Source RYA)
The candidate should be given the opportunity that he/she can demonstrate a level of proficiency in the subject being assessed. Therefore the candidate should be able to explain the subject in great depth, including background theory and practical demonstration, an example being IRPCS." (Source RYA)
"Fantastic! 1:1 course with very good equipment"
Nick Jones. RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment.
